Thoughts about the class.

Sorry for the late response, I was struggling with my account.

I might be in the minority here, But I have changed my mind on this blogging thing. I have nothing against blogging, but I believe this class should meet two days a week. I'm not quite sure why I feel this way, but I do. I think not having to meet on Thursday made me just slack off even more. Well anyways..just quickly posting my thoughts on the subject..

Project Proposal

I think I want to write a movie analysis on the Apocalypse Now Redux. It highlights the horrors of war and humanity in general, especially in the Vietnam war. It is a very deep and moving film that makes a profound impact on people that view it. I will most likely use an informal tone in my paper, due to the informal style of this movie. I will probably need to add a lot of background information for people because most people don't know a whole lot about the Vietnam war. The film has been hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time and ranked number #1 on Channel 4's list of "Movies You Must See Before You Die." Also, the movie has produced some of the best quotes ever.

Background info: The movie is set during the Vietnam war in which the United States forces are battling the North Vietnamese Viet Cong. The horrors and atrocities of this particular war had such an impact on the human psyche that many people were scarred for life after serving in the war.

Classwork from Tuesday, March 11th.

1.) "What is an academic paper?" is more of a formal type of guide to writing this particular style of paper, while "How to write consistently boring literature" throws in many quotes and a few pictures, creating a more informal type of guide.

2.1) 1. Steve gave the check to the waitress.
2. The policy was recommended to be changed.
3. Jenny studied the problem.
4. A bolt of lightning hit the tower.
5. Jose caught the fly ball.
6. I heard that some people might leave the company.
7. Mr. Smith will recieve the donation.
8. A rancher discovered the gold in Wyoming.
9. I wrote the check for one million dollars.
10. The family is recieving several donations.

2.2) I'm not sure if it's just me or not, but I can't seem to find anything wrong with any of these sentances. =\

3. I am analyzing the Hillary Clinton quote. My initial response was that she is a snide bitch. Proposing that a reign of terror such as Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is what America needs is just downright moronic. This isn't tsarist Russia or one of the dynasties in China. Families aren't supposed to control the government, the whole population is. That was my first reaction. I would say my reaction was kind of a mix between intellectual and emotional. The post is effective in it's purpose though. It clearly states her position on the subject at hand in a general and likeable way, then she adds the zinger on the end. Every politician does it. Just a little jab at an opponant to add fuel to the fire. (just note that I also dislike Bush and I am politically liberal, I just dislike Hillary as well) She is playing on the emotions of the ignorant populace that also dislikes Bush, hoping to score easy points for her and her campaign. I would say the thesis is that Hillary Clinton would make a good president and that we should vote for her.

Ethnographies and opinions.

2. http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/gateway_demographics.html

3.

A - I believe it does have an impact, but i'm not quite sure whether it is a positive or negative impact yet.

B - I do believe it's a benefit. It provides a unique insight into other views and thought processes.

C - I would like to think so.

D - I would recommend this type of class structure. It to me is interesting and helps reinforce learning by easily providing links to online readings.

Subcultures.

1. Two subcultures I am interested in learning about are MMORPG(massively multiplayer online role-playing game) players, and emo kids. For the MMORPG players, I can study how the dress, how the talk, their social behaviour, and why they are looked down upon by many people. For the emo kids, I can look at how they dress, what music they listen to, and what makes them so emo.

2. I liked the peer review and thought it was very helpful. I believe we should do more of these.

Project proposal.

The topic that I will be researching and presenting in my paper is the debate over nuclear power. Nuclear power is the controlled splitting of atomic particles and harvesting the explosion's raw power for civil use. The nuclear chain reaction creates heat, which boils water, which creates steam, which in turn drives a steam turbine. I am in support of the use of nuclear energy. It has proven to be a safe, clean, relatively cheap form of renewable energy. People that are against nuclear power are generally ignorant to it's possibilities. Meltdowns like Chernobyl will most likely never happen again due to increased technology over the years, and the problem of nuclear waste has been solved by learning to recycle it into nuclear fuel. There have been many books, articles, papers, and more written about this topic. My research possibilites are almost endless.

Research Excercise #1

Topic: nuclear energy.
Title: Energy for America, by Dr. Arther B. Robisonson. Publiched in The New American. Appleton, Jan. 7, 2008.

Summary: According to Dr. Arther B. Robinson, we can achieve energy independence for the 21st century without destroying the environment. He claims this can be achieved by switching all of our energy dependence onto nuclear power. This is an interesting fact: "There has never been even one human death associated with an American nuclear power reactor incident. By contrast, American dependence on automobiles results in more than 40,000 human deaths per year." (Robinson, pg.2)

Response: I think it is ridiculous that Americans are afraid of using nuclear power, especially given the fact that people drive their cars every day and that is one of the leading causes of death among Americans. It is proven to be a safe, effective and efficient energy source. Even nuclear waste can now be recycled into nuclear fuel. Using nuclear power has no disadvantages or negative side-effects, and many benefits.

Further research: I can try to find an article or book denouncing nuclear power to see the other side of the argument. I can research nuclear reactors' effects on neighboring communities.
